Integrated Systems Testing

What Is Integrated Systems Testing?

According to the National Building and Fire Codes (NBC & NFC) in Canada, buildings with fire protection and life safety systems that are integrated must be tested in concert, and required functioning and operation of the various components as a whole confirmed. This also includes other systems that interact due to their built in fire safety functionality and operational safeguards, such as elevators, pressurization fans, and emergency generators.

What Is CAN/ULC-S1001?

CAN/ULC-S1001 is the accepted and mandated standard for Integrated Systems Testing for fire protection and life safety systems as per the National Building Code of Canada, and the Ontario Building Code (OBC) beginning in 2020. It applies to all buildings that have any fire and life safety system components that are connected, no matter the size of building or number of devices.

Overview of
Responsibilities

As building owners, your responsibilities lie in scheduling the necessary testing and procedures at the appropriate time intervals that are specified by the CAN/ULC-S1001 standard. Testing must be performed one year proceeding the initial testing, and subsequently, at intervals of no more than 5 years apart. It is important to note - If modifications are made to any of these systems, the process must begin again with an initial test. You must also maintain all records of the reports and logs as proof of compliance in perpetuity for inspections by Authorities having Jurisdiction.

Testing and procedures must be performed by a UL Certified Integrated Testing Coordinator (ITC), who is also responsible for ensuring relevant parties required during the each part of the process are present. The process begins with a review and description of the relevant systems and planned testing procedures with operational safety requirement standards. The testing is then carried out and a completed report comprising of the entire process and supporting documentation is compiled.
